After two years of online-only events, it is exciting that the Annual Study Weekend (ASW) 2022 is set to proceed in person this year. The event will take place at St Anne’s College Oxford from Friday afternoon 1st April until lunchtime on Sunday 3rd April 2022.
The ASW is a great opportunity to network and keep up to date with music libraries, and this year already has what looks to be a varied and interesting line up. The history of music in the host university and city will be on full display with tours of Oxford’s music libraries (academic and public) and the Bate collection of Historic Musical Instruments, as well as a presentation on the History of Music in Oxford by former Bodleian librarian, Peter Ward Jones. Meanwhile, Simon Wright will mark the 150th anniversary of Vaughan Williams’s birth with his talk about the composer’s relationship with Oxford University Press.
The ASW will discuss the range of media found in music libraries, looking at the current state of audiovisual technology in music libraries and Charlotte Armstrong (University of York) will fill us in on The Internet of Musical Events (InterMusE) project to create an open-access digital archive of live music performances. There will be presentations on the effects of Covid on library curation (Rupert Ridgewell) and music research (Hope Williard). And the ever-pervasive subjects of music cataloguing ethics and music copyright will be examined by Dr Deborah Lee and members of the IAML (UK & Irl) trade and copyright committee, respectively.
There will also be meals provided, including a reception and formal dinner on the Saturday, and plenty of time for more relaxed unstructured discussion.

The Music Libraries Trust offers a small number of bursaries to cover travel and booking fees (priority given to those who would be unable to attend otherwise) and the details of how to apply for a bursary are here on the trust’s website.
